3. Eligibility
This service is intended for students, teachers, researchers, and other academic affiliates. To register, you must:
- Have a current affiliation with an educational or research institution
- Provide accurate information during verification
- Not misrepresent your academic status
After registration: You may keep your subdomain indefinitely, even after you leave your institution. As long as you were verified when you registered, you retain your subdomain for life.
4. Domain Limits & Retention
- Users with verified .edu or institutional email addresses may register up to 3 subdomains. This limit can be raised by contacting us with a valid reason.
- Once registered, you keep your subdomain(s) for life, even after leaving your institution
- Inactive domain pruning: Subdomains with no DNS records or no activity for 12 consecutive months will be automatically pruned and released back into the available pool
- You will receive advance notice (minimum 30 days) before any subdomain is pruned due to inactivity
- Simply adding or maintaining DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, etc.) keeps your domain active
4.1. Public Contact Requirement (WHOIS)
- Required: Either your institutional email OR a secondary email must be publicly listed in WHOIS data as a valid point of contact (PoC)
- This contact email must be valid, monitored, and reachable at all times
- WHOIS data is publicly accessible and required for domain accountability, abuse reporting, and compliance with domain registration standards
- Non-compliance: Domains without a valid point of contact will be deleted without prior notice
- If your institutional email is about to expire (e.g., after graduation or leaving), you must update your contact email to a permanent secondary email before it becomes unreachable
- You can update your contact email at any time through your account settings
5. DNS & Technical Requirements
- You are responsible for configuring your DNS records correctly
- You may manage DNS records directly on this platform, or set NS records to delegate management to external nameservers (self-hosted nameservers, Hurricane Electric, etc.)
- Do not configure DNS records to point to illegal or prohibited services
- TTL (Time To Live) values must be at least 300 seconds (5 minutes)
- Nameserver changes may take up to 48 hours to propagate
5.1. Technical Restrictions
- Allowed characters: Letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-). Cannot start or end with a hyphen.
- Length: Minimum 1 character, maximum 63 characters for the subdomain label
- Internationalized Domain Names (IDN): Unicode characters and emoji domains are supported and automatically converted to punycode
6. Privacy & Data
- We collect minimal personal information (email, institution name, domain registrations)
- Your information will not be sold or shared with third parties
- WHOIS data is publicly accessible: Your registrant contact email will be visible in public WHOIS lookups. This is a required part of domain registration.
- DNS queries are logged for operational purposes (anti-abuse, debugging)
- You are responsible for any personal data you host on your subdomain
7. Enforcement & Violations
Violations of this policy may result in:
- Warning: First-time minor violations may receive a warning with 7 days to remedy
- Suspension: Immediate suspension of DNS resolution for serious violations
- Termination: Permanent removal of subdomain and account for egregious or repeated violations
- Legal action: We will cooperate with law enforcement for illegal activities
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate service immediately without notice for violations that pose a security risk, legal liability, or harm to others.
Automatic Deletion: Domains without a valid, reachable point of contact in WHOIS will be automatically deleted without prior warning. This includes domains where the registrant email bounces, is unreachable, or has been deactivated.
8. Reporting Abuse
If you encounter a subdomain violating this policy, please report it to:
Email: abuse@nic.info.wf
Include the subdomain in question and details of the violation. We review all reports within 48-72 hours.
9. Service Availability
- This is a community service provided on a best-effort basis
- We do not guarantee 100% uptime or availability
- Planned maintenance will be announced when possible
- We are not liable for data loss, downtime, or service interruptions
